Good write up nikhil. I am 51 yrs old and in the menopausal stage, not yet hit the 12 mths mark. I started menopause abt 2.5 yrs ago and I dint know what hit me. I have always been a hardcore exercise person and suddenly I had no inclination, motivation or energy to get up and get going. Hot flashes is another story. I was putting on weight despite being a v conscious eater and being thin and fit all my life it was troubling me to no extent. A quick check up with my gynecologist, told me I was in menopause hence these changes. I did take HRT for sometime but I cudnt make my self take too many meds for a long time hence I decided to try alternative medicine. Switched to homeopathy and it has helped me tremendously. It does take time and patience but the results are awesome. My body still doesn't want to exercise rigourly so I started small. Yoga alternate days and a 5k walk in Fergusson college, which helps. I am much more enthusiastic about work now. There r ups and downs but am in a much better place than what I was previously.

Shared my alternative med experience here so tht it helps other women who don't want to opt for HRT.

Ashlesha, thank you for being so generous with sharing your experience. This is the type of thing that makes this topic easier to deal with. It’s wonderful that you found what has helped you feel better given how this affects each woman so differently. The lifestyle changes you designed so they were achievable and made a difference is the key. At the end of the day that is what matters the most.

Thanks again for sharing Ashlesha.

Great article Nickhil. Comprehensive and easy to follow. You talk about oestrogen levels dropping, I checked with my doctor to get this tested and she said it fluctuates through the month so is not the best indicator. She suggested other inflammatory markers, thyroid, vit d etc to be checked. She also said irrespective of the oestrogen levels the treatment plans they would suggest will still be the same if other markers are normal, HRT being one of them, of course considering other factors you have mentioned in the article.

Thanks for sharing your experience Meghna. The feedback from your doctor is accurate since estrogen levels do fluctuate a lot and isn’t a reliable marker. Even the inflammatory markers mentioned aren’t necessarily very specific but worth looking out to see if there is chronic inflammation. The key markers to keep an eye on to get a sense for the impact on each woman’s body will be iron, vitamin D and calcium.
